Lyrics

BOZEMAN

You were the queen of our tenement castle
But the kid’s got the flu and the new job’s a hassle
You were a nightmare and I was an asshole
When you had enough you accused me of cheating
But that wasn’t true, technically speaking
I might’ve kissed a girl, but you swore you were leaving by then, yet again

So, you read me the riot act and then my Mirandas
And then you took off for Bozeman, Montana
And I didn’t follow ‘cause I couldn’t stand you by then
And if I have the misfortune to see you, I’ll smile
We’ll laugh about the past and after a while
We’ll fall back in love, start the whole vicious cycle again

I was living on a boat in Buena Del Vista
Making myself crazy trying to resist her
So, on the advice of counsel, I slept with your sister once ... a day ... for a while
When you found out that she was my lover
You told everyone including my mother
And then just for spite, you tag-teamed my brothers
Phil and Don, Paul and John, Mick and Keith, and Frankie and Sammy

When Momma found out, she kicked the bucket
While you danced (as you call it) from Tombstone to Lubbock
With a tattoo of Ronnie Van Zandt on your buttocks for the yen of real men
And if we have the dumb luck to meet again, we’ll chuckle
We’ll drink to the old days, we’ll undo our buckles
We’ll fall back in lust, like a John Waters couple again and again and again

A slow-motion carousel of far away thoughts
Stale Camel straights, malt liquor in quarts
And Pictures of Lily, any port in the storm, to a man
I think about you often and I’ve come to conclude
That the good times outnumber the bad times by two
And you’re the only one that I know who could dance away my blues again

So, if you ever get the notion to leave Texarkana
I’ll be in, of all places, Bozeman, Montana
Just a' waiting for you to bang on my cabana again
And I swear on Momma’s soul, when I see you I’ll burst
We’ll toast our tomorrows and we’ll drown all our thirst
We might fall back in love, life be damned, do your worst again and again and again

Yeah, I swear on Momma’s soul, when I see you I’ll burst
We’ll toast our tomorrows and we’ll deluge our thirst
We’ll fall back in trouble, life be damned, do your worst again and again and again

WRITING: Summer of 2019. It’s a song about one of those terribly toxic love/hate relationships that we all know about. I've never been in one but I've been around them enough to know.

It started with:

“So you read me the riot act and then my Mirandas
And then you took off for Bozeman, Montana
And I didn’t follow cuz I couldn’t stand you by then”

After that, it just unfolded and for the most part, was done in a few days, which is fast for me. I’ve continued to tweak the lyrics, as I will do. It’s just a bad news buffet. Once you give yourself permission that no bad behavior is off-limits, it can get pretty fun.
